How to Apply 1100 Resin-Based Concrete Curing Compound

Learn how to correctly apply 1100 Resin-Based Concrete Curing Compound to freshly placed concrete — covering timing, spray technique, coverage rates, drying times, and important precautions.

Proper curing is one of the most critical steps in concrete construction — and one of the most overlooked. Without adequate moisture retention during the early hydration period, concrete can suffer from surface dusting, cracking, reduced strength, and poor abrasion resistance. 1100 Resin-Based Water Emulsion Concrete Curing Compound is a premium-grade, VOC-compliant solution that locks in moisture and gives your concrete the best possible start.

What Is 1100 Curing Compound?

1100 is a ready-to-use, water-based concrete curing compound formulated from hydrocarbon resins. Once applied, it forms a premium-grade membrane over freshly placed concrete that retains an optimum amount of water for complete cement hydration.

After approximately four weeks, the membrane begins to chemically break down when exposed to UV rays, traffic, and weathering — eventually dissipating from the surface naturally. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications on horizontal and vertical concrete surfaces.

Note: This product was formerly known as 1100-CLEAR. A version with red fugitive dye (Type 1-D) is also available for easier application visibility.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Premium-grade membrane — optimises water retention for complete cement hydration
  • Produces hard, dense concrete — minimises hair checking, thermal cracking, dusting, and surface defects
  • Significantly greater compressive strength compared to improperly cured or uncured concrete
  • Increases tensile strength for greater resistance to cracking and surface crazing
  • Improves abrasion resistance and resistance to salts and chemicals
  • Minimises excessive shrinkage
  • Ready to use — no mixing or thinning required
  • Fast application with conventional commercial spray equipment
  • VOC-compliant

Coverage Rate

Approximately 4.91 m² per litre. Coverage will vary depending on surface finish/texture, concrete condition, and climatic conditions. Always apply to a test area first to determine actual coverage before full-scale application.

What You'll Need

  • 1100 Curing Compound (ready to use — do not thin or dilute)
  • Commercial hand or power sprayer (e.g. Chapin 1949 or equivalent)
  • Spray nozzle rated at 0.5 GPM (1.9 LPM) at 40 psi (0.276 MPa)
  • PPE — gloves and eye protection
  • Soap and water for clean-up (before drying), or mineral spirits (after drying)

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1 — Prepare Your Equipment

Ensure all application equipment is clean and free of any previously used materials. Contamination from other products can affect performance and surface appearance.

Step 2 — Gently Mix the Compound

Gently mix or agitate the 1100 compound before use for optimum performance. Do not mix excessively — over-agitation causes foaming. Do not thin or dilute with any other products or liquids.

Step 3 — Apply at the Right Time

Timing is critical:

  • Horizontal surfaces: Apply as soon as the surface water (bleed water) disappears and the surface will not be marred by walking workmen.
  • Vertical surfaces: Apply promptly after forms are removed.

Step 4 — Spray in a Uniform, Even Film

Apply 1100 using a commercial hand or power sprayer with a nozzle producing 0.5 GPM (1.9 LPM) at 40 psi. Apply in a single, uniform film across the entire surface.

  • An even spray pattern is essential — uneven application causes the cement to hydrate at different rates, which can mirror in the finished surface appearance
  • Check for and replace any clogged or partially clogged spray tips before starting
  • Do not allow the spray nozzle to drip on fresh concrete — drips create high-concentration spots that affect hydration uniformity
  • Do not over-apply — excess film takes longer to dissipate and may cause surface discolouration or yellowing

Step 5 — Allow to Dry and Restrict Traffic

1100 typically dries in 1–2 hours depending on temperature, humidity, and wind conditions.

  • Restrict foot traffic for a minimum of 4 hours after application (12 hours is preferable)
  • Protect the surface from rain and water during the drying period

Important Precautions

  • Do not apply if air or concrete temperature is below 4°C (40°F)
  • Keep from freezing — store and transport above freezing temperatures
  • Do not mix or dilute with any other products or liquids
  • Over-application increases film dissipation time and may cause surface discolouration or yellowing
  • The membrane may take longer to dissipate if overapplied or if the surface has had limited UV exposure
  • Before applying paint, resilient flooring, adhesives, or any subsequent coatings over concrete cured with 1100, check with the manufacturer of the subsequent product for compatibility approval — a small test application is always recommended

Clean Up

  • Before drying: Clean tools and equipment with soap and water
  • After drying: Use mineral spirits or another suitable petroleum solvent

Health and Safety

Direct contact may cause mild irritation. Always wear gloves and eye protection during application. Read and follow all label, precaution, and health and safety information prior to use. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete health and safety information.
