LVL Formwork Timber Explained: RedEdge, Yellow Edge and NP Form

Compare RedEdge, Yellow Edge and NP Form LVL timber, including available sizes, structural grades, coatings and the applications each range is designed for.

LVL formwork timber is manufactured from thin timber veneers bonded together to produce long, straight and consistent sections. For concrete work, that consistency can make boxing easier to set out and help produce a cleaner, more predictable result than irregular general-purpose timber.

Gippsland Concreting Supplies stocks three high-quality LVL ranges: RedEdge, Yellow Edge and NP Form by NelsonPine. Their colours make them easy to identify, but colour alone does not determine which product is suitable. Thickness, structural grade, dimensions and the intended use all matter.

Important: Always follow the project drawings, engineering requirements and the manufacturer’s information. Do not substitute a non-structural edgeboard where a structural LVL member has been specified.

Quick comparison: RedEdge, Yellow Edge and NP Form

Range Length Grade and construction Available sizes Typical purpose
RedEdge 6.0 m 36 mm LVL edgeboard with a square edge and red protective painted finish 100, 150, 170, 200, 240 and 300 mm deep × 36 mm Concrete edgeboards and general slab formwork
Yellow Edge 6.0 m Cross-banded New Zealand Nelson Pine LVL; 36 mm non-structural and 45 mm E13 structural options 100–240 mm deep, depending on thickness Edgeboards, formwork, precasting and structural applications when the specified E13 option is selected
NP Form 6.0 m E11 stress-graded structural LVL manufactured in New Zealand; AS/NZS 4357 and EWPAA product certified 95 × 47, 95 × 65 and 150 × 77 mm Structural formwork, joists, bearers, walers, soldiers and supports

RedEdge LVL edgeboards

RedEdge LVL Formwork Edgeboards are designed for use as concrete edgeboards. Every size is 6 m long and 36 mm thick, with depths from 100 mm through to 300 mm.

The red painted finish provides easy identification and added moisture protection. A square edge helps create a clean concrete edge, while the consistent LVL construction makes the boards straight and manageable across both smaller and larger jobs.

RedEdge sizes

  • 100 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 150 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 170 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 200 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 240 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 300 × 36 mm × 6 m

Yellow Edge LVL

Yellow Edge LVL Formwork Edgeboards are manufactured in New Zealand from cross-banded Nelson Pine LVL. Cross-banding improves cross-grain strength and helps reduce widthwise movement, cupping and swelling in concrete boxing applications.

The important distinction is thickness: the 36 mm boards are non-structural, while the 45 mm boards are structural E13 grade. The moisture-resistant, high-wax yellow coating adds protection and helps make concrete release and handling easier.

Yellow Edge sizes

  • 100 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 150 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 150 × 45 mm × 6 m — E13 structural
  • 170 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 200 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 200 × 45 mm × 6 m — E13 structural
  • 240 × 36 mm × 6 m
  • 240 × 45 mm × 6 m — E13 structural

Yellow Edge is sourced from managed New Zealand pine plantation forests and carries FSC Chain of Custody certification.

NP Form by NelsonPine

NP Form LVL is a structural E11 stress-graded formwork LVL manufactured in New Zealand by NelsonPine. It meets AS/NZS 4357, is EWPAA product certified and is sourced from FSC-certified New Zealand pine plantation forests.

NP Form is intended for structural formwork uses including joists, bearers, walers, soldiers and supports. It has chamfered edges for easier handling and a water-repellent orange painted finish.

NP Form sizes and weights

Size Length Approximate weight per length
95 × 47 mm 6.0 m 15.0 kg
95 × 65 mm 6.0 m 21.0 kg
150 × 77 mm 6.0 m 39.6 kg

Which LVL should you choose?

  • For general slab edgeboards: select the RedEdge or 36 mm Yellow Edge size that matches the required slab depth and project details.
  • When a structural edgeboard is specified: use the appropriate 45 mm E13 Yellow Edge size shown on the plans.
  • For structural formwork members: NP Form provides E11 stress-graded sections for applications such as joists, bearers, walers, soldiers and supports.

These are general comparisons, not engineering instructions. The required size, grade, support spacing, bracing and allowable load must come from the project design or a suitably qualified person.

Why LVL quality and traceability matter

Cheap, unverified timber can create problems before concrete is even poured. Inconsistent dimensions, excessive movement, unclear grading or poor straightness can make formwork harder to align and may not meet the project requirements.

Gippsland Concreting Supplies stocks high-quality LVL formwork products not cheap, unverified imports so you can choose a clearly identified product and get the job done properly. For structural work, always confirm the grade and certification rather than choosing by colour or price alone.

Storage, handling and reuse

  • Store LVL flat, supported evenly and off the ground.
  • Protect it from prolonged exposure to weather and standing water.
  • Handle 6 m lengths carefully and use a team lift or mechanical assistance where required.
  • Inspect boards before each use for damage, excessive distortion or deterioration.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s information and site procedures for cutting, fixing, bracing and reuse.
