What Are Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes?

Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes are pigmented polymer flakes, individually coloured or blended together to create a premium finish on concrete surfaces. Available in various colours and sizes, they are designed for use in the decorative flake flooring system and are suitable for all internal and external applications.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Attractive decorative finish with multiple on-trend colour combinations
  • Durable, long-lasting surface
  • Can be used to create a 'terrazzo' flake effect
  • Suitable for internal or external use
  • Unlimited shelf life if stored in a cool, dry environment

Typical Uses

Internal applications include: Garage floors, shops, warehouses, kitchens and laundries, toilet blocks, offices, schools, and showrooms.

External applications include: Driveways, patios, pathways, entertainment areas, pool surrounds, verandas, and balconies.

Coverage Rate

Theoretical spread rate: 10–30 m² per kg depending on the application method and desired coverage level (full flake vs partial/terrazzo look).

What You'll Need

  • Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes (5KG bag in your chosen colour)
  • Dulux Avista Water Based Epoxy (base coat)
  • Quality 22mm nap roller
  • Spiked shoes for walking on wet epoxy
  • Clean, dry bucket
  • Broom and vacuum
  • Dulux Avista sealer (Polyurethane, 2 Pack Urethane, or Polyaspartic)
  • PPE — organic vapour respirator mask, solvent-resistant gloves, safety eyewear, appropriate footwear

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1 — Prepare the Surface

Prepare the surface following the process outlined in the Dulux Avista Water Based Epoxy TDS. The surface must be clean, sound, and free of contaminants before any coating is applied.

Step 2 — Apply the Epoxy Base Coat

Apply the Dulux Avista Water Based Epoxy as directed in its TDS. Use a quality 22mm nap roller to ensure adequate film build. Do not allow the epoxy to dry before applying the flakes — work in manageable sections of approximately 5–10 m² at a time.

Step 3 — Apply the Decorative Flakes

Remove flakes from the box and place in a clean, dry bucket. Immediately after applying the epoxy coating and while it is still wet, walk out on the job wearing spiked shoes.

Full Flake Application

Evenly sprinkle the dry flakes over the surface from an open flat palm with fingers spread. Move your hand back and forth, allowing the flakes to fall evenly while the surface is still tacky. Ensure full and even coverage across the entire area.

Partial or Terrazzo Look

Collect a small amount of flake in the palm of the hand and throw up high, allowing the flake to spread and fall randomly. If more flake is required, it can be gently sprinkled where needed. Avoid dropping flakes in clumps, as this can leave an undesirable appearance.

Note: A two-person application (one cutting and rolling, one flaking) is recommended for both finishes for best results.

Step 4 — Allow to Cure

Allow the epoxy to cure for a minimum of 6 hours (allow longer in cooler conditions). Once cured, broom and discard excess flake, then vacuum thoroughly.

Note: A partial flake application does not require sanding.

Step 5 — Seal the Surface

The surface must be sealed with one of the following products (refer to the relevant TDS for application details):

  • Dulux Avista Polyurethane Sealer
  • Dulux Avista 2 Pack Urethane Sealer
  • Dulux Avista Polyaspartic Sealer

Additional sanding can be completed between sealer coats for a smoother finish. For external surfaces, use of Dulux Avista Crushed Glass Slip Additive is recommended to increase slip resistance.

Slip Ratings

  • Decorative flake floor finish with Dulux Avista 2 Pack Urethane Sealer (no additive): P3
  • Decorative flake floor finish with Dulux Avista 2 Pack Urethane Sealer + Dulux Avista Slip Reducing Crushed Glass: P5

Maintenance

  • Clean the surface regularly by sweeping and/or pressure cleaning to remove mud, dirt, and gravel
  • Remove oil, grease, and chemical contaminants immediately
  • Remove excess leaf and organic matter to avoid staining
  • Avoid driving on the surface with rocks in tyres
  • Surface should be assessed for resealing after 4 years
